Karas is Namibia's southernmost region, a desert land of vast dunes and rugged mountains, famous for the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world. The climate is hot and dry, with cool winters from May to September perfect for hiking the 85-kilometer canyon trail, and scorching summers from November to March ideal for exploring the ghost town of Kolmanskop, where sand drifts fill abandoned diamond miners' homes. For a taste of the Atlantic, head to Lüderitz in the milder autumn months (April and October) to kayak around coastal penguin colonies or visit the art nouveau buildings that recall the German colonial era.
